138. AUTO INCREMENT

Learn how databases can automatically generate sequential numeric identifiers.

📘 Lesson 138 of 728 ⏱ 8 min 🎯 Beginner

Auto increment is a database feature that automatically generates a new numeric value when a row is inserted. Different database systems use different implementations such as IDENTITY or sequences.

Automatically generated identifiers reduce manual work and help create unique surrogate keys.

When a new employee is inserted, the database can automatically generate EmployeeID rather than requiring the application to provide it.

SQL
CREATE TABLE Employees (
    EmployeeID INT GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY,
    EmployeeName VARCHAR(100),
    Salary DECIMAL(12,2)
);

Auto-generated identifiers are commonly used for employees, customers, orders, products, transactions, and other database records.

  • Auto increment generates values automatically.
  • It is commonly used for numeric identifiers.
  • Syntax differs across databases.
  • It reduces manual identifier generation.
  • It is often used for surrogate keys.
